In pulling off a monumental upset against Serena Williams by defeating the No. 28 seed, 6-2, 6-3, Stosur clinched her first Grand Slam singles title to become the first Australian woman to win the US Open title since Margaret Court in 1973.
The Aussie put on one of the finest performances of her career in the final, hitting 20 winners to 12 unforced errors while breaking Serena's serve five times in the match. Although Stosur was down break points on her serve at 1-2, she remained composed and continued to use her forehand to put Williams on the defensive throughout the second set.
"Ever since I knew what a Grand Slam was, it's been a dream of mine to come out here on this stage and win," said Stosur. "I honestly don't know what to say."
The victory will bring Stosur up to No. 7 in the new rankings when they are released on Monday.
